An ombudsperson (also known as an ombudsman or Mohtasib in Pakistan) is an independent and impartial authority that receives complaints against government departments, public bodies, financial institutions, tax authorities, and other organizations, and then investigates those complaints to fix maladministration, harassment, discrimination, unfair decisions, and abuse of power. In practice, an ombudsperson’s job is to provide a fast, low-cost alternative to court, where individuals, businesses, and Overseas Pakistanis can challenge wrongful actions, seek corrections, and obtain practical relief through written complaints, evidence, and hearings before the relevant ombudsman forum.
